Who? I’m not really sure myself, and here is a little of what I found. Gabriel Obertan is a 20 year-old French international who was rarely used by Bordeaux, and was in fact loaned out for six months last year.
So how does this player impress Ferguson, when he doesn’t appear to be impressing his own club?
The manager of Bordeaux is Laurent Blanc, who anchored the United defense from 2001-2003 under the management of Ferguson. He ended his career at United winning the Premier League and, at the same time, became a close friend of Ferguson’s. He has always been aware of Obertan’s potential and advised Ferguson to keep watch. While Blanc seems surprised that Ferguson has made the move so early, he is not surprised that the move was made.
Blanc was quoted as saying, “I was surprised too, but it is an unexpected chance for him to play with one of the best clubs in the world. Manchester have been tracking him for a long time. They certainly hope to advance him, something that Bordeaux and Lorient have failed to do. He has the potential, but he must overcome psychological and mental challenges so he can express his true value.”
This is Sir Alex’s third signing of the summer. This estimated £3m move looks to be an investment, rather than an immediate addition to the first team. Ferguson told United’s official website, “Gabriel is a player we have tracked for a few years now, but because of his educational programme our efforts to get him here have always been delayed. We are delighted to get him now as he is an exciting prospect. We like to get young players and develop them, and we will see that in Gabriel over the next two years.”
