Guess Who Is Coming To Your Club…

28 05 2010

Thats right its transfer rumour time!!! I HATE IT!!!!! My “breaking news” sites that I check everyday for the latest news on Newcastle United  {as well as I’m sure every other club} is full of he said she said of who is coming and going for next season squad. None of these rumours ever end up being true and it really is just a waste of time but here are a few potential transfers that I have read over the last 2 weeks:

-Fernando Torres to Manchester City

-Steven Gerrard to Celtic

-Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona

-Steven Taylor to Arsenal

-Marlon Harewood to Newcastle United

-Jermaine Beckford to Newcastle United

-Didier Drogba to LAFC Chelsea {womens league cuz he is a bitch}

-Robin Van Persie to Chip n Dale FC

Maybe some of these will go through but honestly who can you trust. Thank goodness for the World Cup next month cuz Im already bored!!!

U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A?

28 05 2010

First thoughts on the final 23 is there is nothing there that is surprising, and at the same time, there is nothing that exciting.  I could have selected this roster, actually, even Mark could have selected this roster.

A major issue with the US team of 2010 and the teams of the past is that we (yes I said we, I am a yank) don’t have a game changing player in the US squad, and that will hurt us once we move past the group stage.  We have serviceable personnel all over the field, but if you look at the club teams represented, there are not too many powerhouses, or if they are on a major club they are not playing in the first-team.

For example, Oguchi Onyewu plays for AC Milan, but hasn’t featured in their first team yet.  I know that he is recovering from an ACL tear, but if you look at other high level World Cup squads, some of the biggest names in football are not making their national team because they have not played enough first team football, so they are left to vacation in the south side of France.

An example of this is in the French squad.  Forward Karim Benzema was left out of the French team because he has not played enough in the starting line up, not just the first team.  He was bought in the summer by Real Madrid for around $44 million, but struggled to find a place in the starting line up of a super star team.  He is still an excellent player, even so much that there are rumors that Manchester United are looking to purchase him this summer.

Now a player who plays regularly on one of the best teams in the world, sought after by another world class team, and cannot find away into the French squad shows me two things:

First – The US squad lacks depth.  We are willing to reserve a spot for Onyewu even though he has not featured for AC Milan and is coming back from a serious injury and is probably not fully fit.  That worries me when the games reach the 80th minute.  That is when you will see the most critical mistakes made and goals scored.  And these mistakes are made by fatigued players that are not 90 minute match fit, like Onyewu is likely to be.

Second – The US just does not have world class players (except between the posts).  Our game changer is Landon Donovan.  Excellent football player, but a role player.  At Everton he did his role well and they loved him for it, but he is not one to strike fear in any team.  For the US, his role is to be that player, and he just isn’t.

As for South Africa we should make it out of the group stage pretty easily based on the assessment of the teams.  Since Algeria and Slovenia are both so lowly ranked we should be favored to win those matches.  We are used to playing undisciplined squads and have a good understanding that discipline and structure will get you these wins.

With a potential match against Germany in the second round, it is hard to see a way around them (thank goodness Ballack’s giant forehead is out of the way) based on my assessment of this team.  It all comes down to heart and belief, and that is the one thing we cannot measure.

That is the assessment two weeks before, should be interesting to see what happens.

Year In Review

9 05 2010

WOW what a season!!! As much as it hurts to say it but congrats to Mark and Chelsea FC on winning the title a few hours ago. But with THAT low point of the season this year has been filled with many wonderful moments for all of us here at Among The Thugs. This being our first season writing this blog I would just like to kind of recap some of those amazing times.

Remember when:

1. Andy came on board with Aston Villa and actually predicted the out come of a few high-profile matches. His crazy brand of wit and stupidity took us to new worlds. {what ever happened to Andy?}

2. Mark also came on board and chose to support the one team that he knew would receive the most hate from the rest of the Thugs. But Mark also added a great dimension to the site. Though not as witty and stupid as Andy, Mark came with his own sense of intellectualism that no one really understands and really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But now we get to hear Mark’s bla bla bla for an awful long time now so for all our dedicated readers I do apologise.

3.Among The Thug Radio!!! Brilliant!!!! Although we have only had a few shows it was an amazing find. You may all look forward to many for episodes of us trying to sound smart but really just making fun of Mark and Chelsea.

4.Sean……the brains behind this life fulfilling journey. If not for Sean and his posts on game play strategy and British definitions this site would simply be videos of Japanese game show where guys get hit in the balls and Man U fans named Benny.

5.Jason… posted the recipe of what has become one of my most favorite beers in the world…..and for that I owe you my life.

6. Shawn…this season saw you and me take the verbal abuse week after week after week of being in the Championship League. But through all that you and I have come out victorious my friend!!!! NEWCASTLE IS BACK AND BEAUTIFUL!!!! Thanks for being there with me…..

7. Louie………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Seriously, from all of us here at Among The Thugs we would like to thank all of you that have shown interest in our site. Thanks to all of you that have helped us become what you see today. A very special thanks to everyone at Pitchslap, EPL Talk, We Don’t Know Football, Just Thanks for all your support and feedback. We look forward to bringing all of you some interesting post during the World Cup.  Thanks again….

In Fashionable Style

9 05 2010

Chelsea won the Barclay’s Premier League in strong fashion today, with an 8-0 drubbing against Wigan.  What else did we accomplish?

  1. Record 103 goals scored in the campaign – 17 better than Man U
  2. Drogba wins the Golden Boot over Rooney with 29 goals on the season, thanks to a hat-trick today (would definitely have been better without the sulking Drogs)
  3. Cech and the back line kept 17 clean sheets this season, for the “Golden Glove”.
  4. 4 times this season that the club has gone for 7 or more goals… and the third time in the last 2 months!

Way to go Blues… thanks for the memorable first season of fandom.  Many more to come.

And a huge thanks to Sean and Jacob who introduced me to the EPL and are now wishing they hadn’t.  You guys are the best… I love the Thugs.

Manchester United announces shock loan deal.

9 05 2010

In a shocking twist of events Manchester United announced today that it will be loaning out the premier league title and trophy to Chelsea for the next year.  Sir Alex said that the loan deal would be a good experience for the trophy considering it was getting complacent sitting in the same trophy case, honored by the same fans, for three years straight.

For you parents out there, this loan deal is much like watching your son or daughter leave for a study abroad program.  You know that they will go out, they will party, they will rarely study, make questionable friends, maybe get arrested, but they will eventually long for home.

The trophy will go out and party like a call girl with Ashley Cole, be a part of a racy photo shoot with Drogba, and get involved in a womanizing scandal with Terry, and when the dust has settled and the glitter, make up, and soul-glow has been washed away, the trophy will long for it’s home, Old Trafford.
